The things I saw #2

October 25, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

I thought I’d add an entry from my travel log with this, the second ‘The things I saw’ article. All the images here were made using an Olympus MjuII and various 35mm film, including Kodak Portra, Agfa Vista, Fuji Superia and expired Kodak Tri-X 400. This images are my analogue notebook, visual sketches of my travels. ‘Sunday 18th October, Calais, France – I never, for one moment, realised that the migrant situation was so dire. Arriving in Calais is like […]

Spanish Retro

July 16, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

These images are an homage to my love of family run, independent, budget hotels, B&Bs, motels and guest houses. I’ve been staying in such establishments for years, for both business and pleasure. Years ago, I had a few commissions with The Times Newspaper – they’d give me £100 a day (which was a lot for a daily hotel allowance – even 15 years ago), I’d always find somewhere really cheap, never more than £30 a night, and spend the rest […]

The Wall

June 19, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

I like walls… I don’t know what else to say about that really? Walls are great for holding roofs up and putting doors and windows in, but on a more personal level, I like walls because they make great backdrops for portraits. Walls also prevent my subjects from running away in the opposite direction. Technical info – (top to bottom) – Fuji GW690III/Kodak Portra 400 Polaroid 600/IP Color 600 Pentax LX/50mm 1.2/Agfa Vista 200 Nikon D800E/35mm 1.4 Fuji GW690/Kodak Portra […]

Poles Apart

June 9, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

I believe that the genre of ‘people photography’ can be separated into three distinct categories  – neutral, negative and positive. Neutral photographs are the trivial and meaningless images we see everyday on the likes of Facebook – friends on a night out, snaps of your partner eating the meal you just prepared, selfies… these images neither give anything or take anything away, either artistically or emotionally. Next is the negative category. Here are the photographs that violate, make lives worse […]

A Trip down Memory Lane

May 28, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

I began my professional photography career in 1987, the job was advertised as ‘Entertainment and Nightclub Photographer’ and it stated, quite clearly, that applicants must be over the age of 21 – I was 17 at the time, but applied anyway, lied about my age and experience and got the job. The Isle of Man was a very different place in 1987 – every other building on Douglas promenade was a hotel, guesthouse or pub, and in the summer the […]

Banned

May 24, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

I’ve been banned from Facebook for 7 days for posting the above image, which is deemed to be ‘inappropriate’ for displaying nudity, which is odd, because I can quite clearly see that Gianni is wearing jeans. If you do need to get hold of me for business reasons (I do 90% of my work via Facebook), please contact me through mail@philkneen.com. Thank you.

‘horses for courses…

May 22, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

Both the images above of musician, Mae Challis, were made using a digital Canon EOS 5DmkIII and 50mm f1.0 lens – a lot of people think I’ve got this whole ‘anti-digital’ thing going-on – I haven’t, if I shot all my work, personal and commercial, on film I’d be bankrupt within about a week! I think people mistake digital and film photography as being the same medium, but it’s like saying pens and pencils are the same – they look […]

Big in Japan

May 8, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

So I finally got some film back from the lab, it’s taken ages, and I’m not the most patient of people! But it was worth the wait, I hope. I’m shooting all my personal work on film now, the only digital camera I carry with me when I’m not shooting commercially is my iPhone. The latest acquisition into my analogue armoury is a Fuji GW690III medium format rangefinder – it’s a beauty, and everything about it is BIG! Apart from […]

Please release me…

February 23, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

One of the main reasons for shooting my Spain project on film was because I wanted honest, straightforward portraits of people, shots like these can often seem unflattering and harsh to the sitter. I didn’t want to shoot digital and have the constant distraction of people asking to see the shots as soon as I’d taken them, not liking them and asking me to take another…or not take another and leave as quickly as possible! But guess what I […]

The things I saw #5

February 17, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

Here’s a few more snapshots from my visual meanderings, all taken in Spain during January, in no particular order. All shots were made using an Olympus MjuII 35mm compact and Agfa Vista 200 film. I’m going to venture back into the world of mono this week, a friend gave me 10 rolls of Ilford HP5 black and white film a while ago, it expired 5 years ago, but I’ve done a bit of research and I think it should be fine. […]
