Imperfect Symmetry

January 13, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

I remember my art teacher attempting to explain ‘The Rule of Thirds’ to me when I was about 14. When I got my first camera, I tried to follow this practice – placing the point of interest to one side of the frame… but I didn’t like any of the photographs, they just didn’t feel right. For a while I honestly believed that this rule, this Golden Section as it is known in the art world, was an actual real […]

Only Human

October 31, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

Here’s a few portraits I shot while I was last in France and Spain. All made using either an Olympus MjuII 35mm compact or a Fuji GW690III 6x9cm. Film is Kodak Portra 160/400/800. Developed and scanned at UK Film Lab.  This will probably the last post for a while as I’m off to Calais tomorrow to make portraits and document on the various migrant camps in the French coastal town. The last time I was there I had great difficulty […]

Paradise, Never Found.

October 25, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

11th October, Benidorm, Spain – I talked to an Englishman called Tom, he was out walking his dog. Well, the dog was walking, he was riding a mobility scooter. Tom lives in a permanent caravan in the campsite next to the one I’m on. This is what Tom had to say (this is quoted, verbatim, and contains strong language) – “There’s an old Scottish woman living down on the same camp site you’re on, she did have a husband, but […]

Oz

October 23, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

When things turn to shit, there really is no place like home. After a string of pitfalls toward the end of the first month of my European road trip, I’ve decided to return to my home on the Isle of Man, just for a couple of weeks, to level-out. I feel like a kids jigsaw that’s been put together, but with all the pieces in the wrong place. I need to reassemble that jigsaw! Contrary to what a lot of […]

Oh… Canada

August 3, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

As is fairly normal in my life, plans have changed – this September I was supposed to be going to France to shoot a project on the Atlantic coast, documenting migrant surfers for three months… however, I’ve changed my mind, I’m now going to Canada to finish a long-term project I’ve been working on for about four years now. This decision mainly comes down to money – last time I was in Canada I got $1.2 for my £1 Sterling, […]

Spanish Retro

July 16, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

These images are an homage to my love of family run, independent, budget hotels, B&Bs, motels and guest houses. I’ve been staying in such establishments for years, for both business and pleasure. Years ago, I had a few commissions with The Times Newspaper – they’d give me £100 a day (which was a lot for a daily hotel allowance – even 15 years ago), I’d always find somewhere really cheap, never more than £30 a night, and spend the rest […]

“It’s not the camera…”

June 22, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

“It’s not the camera that makes the photograph, it’s the photographer” – or is it? I recently read an article in The British Journal of Photography… it was an interview with Magnum photojournalist, Raymond Depardon. The veteran French photographer – now in his early 70s – was asked, “What are your fears now?” His answer surprised me, considering he is rated as an A-lister in the world of photography… but, at the same time, I totally related to it. “As […]

The Wall

June 19, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

I like walls… I don’t know what else to say about that really? Walls are great for holding roofs up and putting doors and windows in, but on a more personal level, I like walls because they make great backdrops for portraits. Walls also prevent my subjects from running away in the opposite direction. Technical info – (top to bottom) – Fuji GW690III/Kodak Portra 400 Polaroid 600/IP Color 600 Pentax LX/50mm 1.2/Agfa Vista 200 Nikon D800E/35mm 1.4 Fuji GW690/Kodak Portra […]

The Eye of The Beholder

June 18, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

I entered a photography competition once – the NME Music Photographer of the Year Awards 2011. My six submitted images of The Vaccines, The Charlatans frontman, Tim Burgess, and the Japanese Acid Punk band, Bo Ningen secured me a second place out of over two hundred entries in the professional category. That was the first photography competition I’ve ever entered – I was more than happy with the runner-up position as I’d only entered because a musician friend told me […]
