All images were made using various film cameras – Nikon F100/50mm 1.4G, Fuji GA645 and Pentax 67/105mm 2.4. Film stock is Portra 400 at box speed in the medium formats, and a roll of 15 year expired Kodak Kodacolor Gold 200 in the Nikon.
All images of Megan and Laura were made using various cameras and either Kodak Portra 400 or Fuji Superia 400 film. The fourth image down was shot on 120 medium format film, I then accidentally left the roll in direct window light for a couple of days, which is why the frame numbers have imprinted through the backing paper and onto the negative.
6×4.5cm – it’s the ‘middle child syndrome’ of the film world; stuck between 35mm and 6x7cm, it tends to get overlooked and somewhat neglected. I require the inherent image quality of medium format, but I also like the convenience and speed of 35mm, especially 35mm compacts, such as the Olympus MjuII. Basically, I’m lazy; so what I’ve always wanted/needed is a medium format point ‘n’ shoot camera – the GA645 is that camera. The GA645 was released in 1997, as […]
Last month, I had the pleasure of meeting and photographing Stephen Macartney, Peter McVeigh, Katie Richardson and Warren Attwell, four Irish musicians who form part of the Northern Irish Singer-Songwriters Circle. My good friend and music promoter, Jonno Gollow, brought the four over to my hometown of Peel, on the Isle of Man, to hold a songwriters workshop during the day and to a very well attended gig at the Peel Centenary Centre in the evening. Jonno is singlehandedly […]
A friend of mine bought a new sofa – it looks like leather, it feels like leather, and it even smells like leather – but it’s not. It’s plastic. Internationally-renowned photojournalist, Sebastião Salgado, up until a few years ago, shot all of his work on film; he’d carry two all manual Leica cameras, a couple of lenses and bag full of Kodak black and white film. Whenever he got the chance, the Brazilian would have his film developed and printed. […]
I have to confess; I came close to selling my Hasselblad last week. I got another batch of films back, and there were a lot of disappointingly mediocre shots, in my opinion. But then I looked again – I think to go from years of shooting in the rectangular ratio back to square has confused my compositional mind, and I’m just not used to seeing my images that way. So I’m going to persevere – I’ve set myself a challenge; […]
I’m not sure what’s going on over in Japan at the Fuji factory, but they seemed to be putting all their efforts into the production and sale of Instax instant film. I’ve shot a lot of this emulsion, firstly with the wide, but most recently with the Mini version, which I actually prefer; the colours and tones are perfect for portraits, IMHO. When Fuji finally release the square instant film, which I’m guessing will be the same size as the […]
Hasselblad; the legendary, Swedish medium format camera – every professional or serious amateur photographer has, at some point, owned one or wanted to own one, and I’m no exception. A few years ago I managed to lay my hands on a particularly fine 503cx, however, during a moment of temporary insanity I swapped it for a Canon lens, a decision I always regretted. Ever since that rather unwise transaction, about five years ago, I’ve shot various other medium formats – […]
I had the pleasure of giving a talk to members of the Isle of Man Photographic Society last week, it’s the first time I’ve done something like this to other photographers, so I was slightly apprehensive. They were a friendly audience, but I’m not sure that some of them, notably the older members, ‘got’ my somewhat alternative brand of photography. Despite arriving totally unprepared, I managed to talk for over two hours; I deliberately kept away from the technical aspects […]
More visual meanderings from a recent trip to Liverpool with my good chum and fellow analogue photographer, Ed Riley. I gave another good friend a 35mm film camera the other day to have a play with – Hannah, a very keen photographer, has only ever made images using her iPhone, but has been interested in using film for a while now. There were a lot of questions asked about the technical side of analogue photography, but I told Hannah that […]
