I don’t know a lot about fishing, but what I do know, is that the longer fishermen are sat around between tows, the less money they’re earning… On Wednesday morning, our third day out, the mood was low – for the first couple of days out on Mizpah, the hauls of fish had been less than bountiful; the crew were on the processing deck, sorting and gutting fish, for as little as 20-minutes after some hauls. I’d been speaking to […]

Mizpah LK173

November 13, 2019 by Phil Kneen Photography

Mizpah – Its first usage (Gen 31.49-50) refers to it as a pillar of stones set up by Jacob and Laban. The pillar of stones acted as a witness to the bond between the two men. These are the first of many images I made in the last couple of weeks aboard the fishing trawler, Mizpah LK173, based out of Lerwick in Shetland. I’ve had to come home for a few days; however, I’ll be heading north again very soon. My […]

The Challenge

February 23, 2019 by Phil Kneen Photography

‘Tuesday 19th February – I slept through the steam down to the fishing grounds, and woke-up heaving. I only just made it outside, but while I’m feeding the fish with the two waffles I managed to grab on the way out of the house, I work out that we’re south; southwest of the Chicken Rock lighthouse, to be more accurate. Michael wants to play a game that he calls ‘The Wet Challenge.’ – the rules, as far as I can […]

Reul na Mara

December 12, 2018 by Phil Kneen Photography

Towing nets for 6-hours leaves a lot of time to sit around doing nothing, especially when the crew are all asleep. On this particular day, I sat alone in the galley, writing in my journal while watching ‘Jaws’. ‘Wednesday 14th November 58°14.004N/5°34.310W Course – 101° Moderate-rough Overcast 13.00 – I first tried fishing when I was about seven-years-old, it was during a family holiday in Peel, on the Isle of Man. I’d teamed-up with my brother to harass my dad […]

The womb

December 10, 2018 by Phil Kneen Photography

Once my sea sickness had disappeared, I found sleeping on a fishing boat to be very comfortable. A little bit too comfortable, in fact… ‘Tuesday 13th November 58°57.195N/6°59.510W Course – 228° Moderate-rough Rain 09:00 – The battery on my phone died – It’s taken me nearly half an hour to figure out whether it’s Monday, or still Tuesday… I’m not sure if it’s an advantage or a disadvantage, I suppose it depends on how you look at it? But sleeping […]

One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest

December 9, 2018 by Phil Kneen Photography

This journal entry was made halfway through my outing on the Reul na Mara; We’d come back to Scrabster harbour to shelter from the storm which had chased us all the way from Orkney, a maritime rollercoaster ride that lasted 10-hours. Ross’ approach and entry into a turbulent and blindingly dark Scrabster harbour was an impressive display of boat handling and a testament to his 36-years experience at sea – he made it look as easy as negotiating a shopping […]

Wet Work

February 26, 2018 by Phil Kneen Photography

After all my research into seasickness, the almost endless conflicting advice and remedies, I’ve finally cracked it. Ginger tablets, wristbands, stare at the horizon, don’t look at the horizon, cheese and onion crisps, run on the spot, lie down, stand up, earplugs, pour urine over yourself (that one might have been for box jellyfish stings, actually) … I should have just listened to what almost every seasoned fisherman has been advising me for the last few months – “You just […]

Early finish

March 16, 2017 by Phil Kneen Photography

When it comes to spending twelve hours a day on a scallop dredger, I have two choices – either medicate myself with anti-nausea pills, which cause drowsiness, and spend half the day asleep in a bunk below deck. Or, don’t take the pills and spend most of the day, below deck, in a bunk trying not to vomit. For this, my third trip out on the Sarah Lena, I chose the former; at least that way I can still function […]
