The things i saw (south africa) #2

April 4, 2018 by Phil Kneen Photography

At the moment, I’m sorting through about 100 ‘final’ images, mostly portraits, whittled down from 400 photographs I made for the photo-essay ‘Plakkerskamp’. I’m itching to share more, but I can’t, at the moment. So here’s another entry from my visual notebook. I’ve also included an entry from my journal which I wrote on the evening of my first visit to the white squatters camp at Krugersdorp, situated about 20km northwest of Johannesburg. ‘Munsieville Camp, Krugersdorp – We sat outside […]

The things I saw (South Africa) #1

April 2, 2018 by Phil Kneen Photography

‘The things I saw’ – my visual notetaking and mental meanderings with a 35mm compact camera – I’d like to say it’s a regular thing. However, I just checked, and the last one I did was nearly 18 months ago, documenting a weekend drinking session in Liverpool with a good friend. Before I departed for a weeks work in South Africa, to document white squatter camps, I was reunited with my favourite 35mm compact – the Olympus MjuII, which had […]

Holmtown

February 1, 2018 by Phil Kneen Photography

A few people have asked why I’ve titled my latest project, ‘Holmtown’? Well, for this longterm photo-essay, I’m documenting the lives of fishermen from my hometown of Peel, on the Isle of Man – Peel, which until the 17th century was called Holmtown. I was going to call it ‘Holmtown Boys’, however, a very good friend of mine pointed out that it sounds like a 90’s boy band – and it does. This leads me to another common question regarding […]

Flat White

October 8, 2017 by Phil Kneen Photography

This is my good friend, Allan Fair; Allan is the resident coffee aficionado at Noa Bake House. Noa Bake House has, over the years, become the unofficial creative hub of the Isle of Man, it started off as a bakery but has since expanded into a cafe/eatery/bar/gig venue/art gallery and general meeting place. I sometimes get in there early, bag one of the comfy leather sofas and turn the corner into a temporary office. A cup of coffee is a […]

The Yellowknife Diaries (part 3)

October 16, 2012 by Phil Kneen Photography

I don’t enjoy flying, I’m a big man and I get uncomfortable, even on short flights. I also get bored. So, there’s nothing I like more, after a long flight, than to get to my destination and have a few refreshing beers to help me relax… “Sunday 9th September ’12 – Arrive in Yellowknife. We land in Yellowknife at about 2pm. As soon as we get off the plane I need a pee, Trevor says I’m like a child and […]

Arctic Roll.

June 25, 2012 by Phil Kneen Photography

In a little over 2 months, on September 5th, I’ll be flying 3500 to Yellowknife in the North West Territories of Canada to shoot a 3 week photo-essay with writer Trevor Gibbs. I’d originally asked Trevor to manage a different project I was thinking about, based around the South West States of America, however, shortly after Trevor came on board we decided that we might as well make it a joint venture. After a couple of weeks researching the S/W […]
