That was 2018…

December 29, 2018 by Phil Kneen Photography

At the end of last year, one of my goals was to be less erratic and casual with the things I chose to photograph, to avoid flitting from one subject to another with no real consistency. I think, to a point, that I managed it – quality over quantity. The career highlights of 2018 were my white squatter camp project, ‘Plakkerskamp’, and a two-week autumn trip out into the North Atlantic on a fishing trawler – both projects took me […]

Digitalise Me

December 26, 2018 by Phil Kneen Photography

I do use digital cameras, on the odd occasion – these images were all made using iPhone 8+ and Nikon D610. All images were edited using VSCO desktop (which has now been discontinued, apparently)

Sea state – moderate

December 5, 2018 by Phil Kneen Photography

For two weeks in November, I joined the fishing vessel, Ruel na Mara and her crew, working about 100km northwest off the Outer Hebrides. I don’t wish to romanticise something that these men do for work, all year round, but for me, it was an incredible experience. “A proper adventure”, as a friend dubbed it – two weeks on a 24 metre, wooden-hulled trawler, with two Scotsmen and four Filipinos somewhere in North Atlantic, wearing the same underwear for days […]

54.26° N, 4.68° W

February 13, 2018 by Phil Kneen Photography

These are the last images from ‘Holmtown’ that I’ll be sharing, for now; I’ve got to the point where I need to collate everything I have and get it all into some order. Also, there are dozens of faces I want to photograph in and around the harbour and breakwater area of Peel, some of them who are involved in the fishing industry on the Isle of Man but don’t necessarily go out to sea. Since I started this project, […]

That was 2017

December 27, 2017 by Phil Kneen Photography

Another year, nearly over, so while I’m sat here nursing a hangover, I’ll post my yearly review. As usual, these are a selection of my personal favourites. I’ve unquestionably shot a lot less this year, but that’s been a deliberate attempt at quality over quantity. For the first time, all the photographs in my final lineup were shot on film. I never make New Year resolutions; whenever I notice my stomach expanding, I find it easier to do do something […]

Embrace the Shadows

October 14, 2017 by Phil Kneen Photography

They’re everywhere – peachy coloured, backlit portraits of redheads and brides, shot on Kodak Portra 400, over-exposed by 5 stops and metered for the shadows. These images have become, in analogue photography, what HDR is to digital… I don’t even know the word? What’s so hackneyed and worn-out that it goes beyond cliché? This method of shooting colour negative film has become so prevalent that it now seems to be the default, photographers ‘shooting at box speed’ has become the minority. […]

The things I saw #9

October 30, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

This is the last of my ‘The things I saw’ series, my visual meanderings and notebook of the banal from a month in The Netherlands, France, Spain and Andorra. Some people have enjoyed these shots, others have not, finding them… well, banal. You can’t please everyone – which is why I don’t try to. As the Canadians say, “It is what it is”. Over the next couple of days I’m going to be re-packing my camper van in readiness for […]

The things I saw #2

October 25, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

I thought I’d add an entry from my travel log with this, the second ‘The things I saw’ article. All the images here were made using an Olympus MjuII and various 35mm film, including Kodak Portra, Agfa Vista, Fuji Superia and expired Kodak Tri-X 400. This images are my analogue notebook, visual sketches of my travels. ‘Sunday 18th October, Calais, France – I never, for one moment, realised that the migrant situation was so dire. Arriving in Calais is like […]

The things I saw #1

October 24, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

Today is the last day of British summertime, tomorrow morning the clocks will be set an hour backward and the Isle of Man will be plunged in to six months of perpetual darkness, cold and damp… okay, it’s not quite that bad, but that’s how it always feels – goodbye, greens and blues. Hello, grey. As my good friend pointed-out a couple of days ago – “This is never a good time of year for you…”. She’s right, as usual. […]
