The things I saw (Tokyo) #7

April 27, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

‘There’s a lot of shit talked about photography, but you go out, take a photo of something you like, if you enjoy that image then it’s a good photo. It’s really that simple’  I wrote that when I first started this blog, and five years later it’s a statement I still stand by, even more so now. This is the last in the ‘The things I saw (Tokyo)’ series, I love every single shot, but I’ve saved my personal favourites until […]

The things I saw (Tokyo) #6

April 26, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

People warned me that Tokyo is expensive, so I went prepared, but to be honest, it wasn’t. With the exchange rate the way it is at the moment (British £ – Japanese Yen), it means most things are cheaper than in the UK – a really good meal for two, with beer or wine (for me, not Jess, she’s only 15… although she looks older and was offered alcohol in almost every restaurant we went to) can be had for […]

The things I saw (Tokyo) #3

April 24, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

More visual meanderings and photographic sketches from a recent trip to Japan… Eating in Tokyo can be problematic, especially if you stray merrily off the tourist route, like we did… a lot of restaurants have a digital ordering and pre-pay system – you go in, select your food, you get a ticket and go and sit down – then your food arrives, but because the entire menu was only in Japanese, you don’t actually know what you ordered, but the […]

Jarrod Dickenson

February 17, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

“Storytelling is something of a Texas tradition. Tall hats and even taller tales are woven into the fabric of The Lone Star State, and singer-songwriter, Jarrod Dickenson can spin a yarn with the best of them. Hailing from Waco, now based in Brooklyn, Dickenson spends most of his time on the road bringing his own particular brand of soulful americana to a wide variety of music loving audiences around the globe” All images made with Nikon F100, 28mm and 50mm […]

The things I saw #6

October 28, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

More random visual meanderings and scribbles with the pen and the camera. All images made using an Olympus MjuII 35mm compact and Kodak Portra 160 film. Today I’ve realised that I get as anxious about my equipment as I do every other aspect of my life… I love the Olympus MjuII… I’m actually starting to wonder if I should just shoot everything, all my projects, using this one camera? I have two of these little compacts now – one I […]

The things I saw #2

October 25, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

I thought I’d add an entry from my travel log with this, the second ‘The things I saw’ article. All the images here were made using an Olympus MjuII and various 35mm film, including Kodak Portra, Agfa Vista, Fuji Superia and expired Kodak Tri-X 400. This images are my analogue notebook, visual sketches of my travels. ‘Sunday 18th October, Calais, France – I never, for one moment, realised that the migrant situation was so dire. Arriving in Calais is like […]

1997-2015

July 18, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

It’s a sad day – my favourite camera, the Olympus MjuII died last week. I should have seen it coming really, all the signs were there – overlapping frames, light leaks, strange noises… but I just ignored it, pretended everything was okay. Photographers should never outlive their cameras, should they? Why is technology so fragile? So, in between bouts of sobbing, I choke back the tears and go onto eBay to find a replacement… this shouldn’t be too traumatic, or […]

The things I saw #6

February 17, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

This is the last of the snapshots from my visual meanderings, all taken in Spain during January, in no particular order. All shots were made using an Olympus MjuII 35mm compact and Agfa Vista 200 film. I hope people have enjoyed these photos as much as I enjoyed taking and sharing them. Possibly not. I need to start working on the project I was actually in Spain to shoot now, sorting out and editing portraits and contacting all the people to sign […]

Serendipity…

December 2, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

I have to confess that this image was the result of almost complete fluke. I was doing a shoot with the beautiful Fudge Plaatjies, mostly shooting digital, but toward the end of the session I thought I’d get a few frames on film, so out came my favourite 35mm camera – the Minolta Hi-Matic GF…which it turns-out, and not for the first time, I hadn’t loaded properly. Toward the end of the roll the film jammed, but I carried-on trying […]

“Did you shoot any film?”

October 23, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

Whenever I’m shooting on digital, whether it’s commercial or personal, my PA always tells me to shoot some film too, and she always makes sure I have! My go-to film camera for the past few months has been an old Olympus Mju-II 35mm compact (recently replaced by a Minolta Hi-Matic), it’s always in my bag and I always try to use it whenever I can (honestly I do, Ciara…). I use whatever film is cheapest, for the last few months […]
