“It’s not the camera…”

June 22, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

“It’s not the camera that makes the photograph, it’s the photographer” – or is it? I recently read an article in The British Journal of Photography… it was an interview with Magnum photojournalist, Raymond Depardon. The veteran French photographer – now in his early 70s – was asked, “What are your fears now?” His answer surprised me, considering he is rated as an A-lister in the world of photography… but, at the same time, I totally related to it. “As […]

The Wall

June 19, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

I like walls… I don’t know what else to say about that really? Walls are great for holding roofs up and putting doors and windows in, but on a more personal level, I like walls because they make great backdrops for portraits. Walls also prevent my subjects from running away in the opposite direction. Technical info – (top to bottom) – Fuji GW690III/Kodak Portra 400 Polaroid 600/IP Color 600 Pentax LX/50mm 1.2/Agfa Vista 200 Nikon D800E/35mm 1.4 Fuji GW690/Kodak Portra […]

A Trip down Memory Lane

May 28, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

I began my professional photography career in 1987, the job was advertised as ‘Entertainment and Nightclub Photographer’ and it stated, quite clearly, that applicants must be over the age of 21 – I was 17 at the time, but applied anyway, lied about my age and experience and got the job. The Isle of Man was a very different place in 1987 – every other building on Douglas promenade was a hotel, guesthouse or pub, and in the summer the […]

Sophia Russell

March 25, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

I’ve been working again with the stunningly beautiful, 18 year-old, Sophia Russell. For this shoot we used an old American pick-up truck that was loaned to us by the owner after being spotted by my friend, Ciara. Sophia is an amazing model, not only does she look great, but she’s also professional and needs very little or no direction; this, I believe, makes for more natural looking images. For the technically minded, all the images here were made using the […]

Girls

March 9, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

I’m mad busy at the moment, so I thought I’d just post a few of my favourite images from the last week or so. I’ve photographed a lot of ladies, from 18 months old to my 95-year-old grandmother on her birthday. Variation – it’s what I love about being a portrait photographer! All the shots below were made using film, I’m shooting with an old Pentax SP1000 and a Nikon FM2, both of which have light leaks that I don’t […]

Joanne

February 27, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

It really pains me that I can’t share these images of the stunningly beautiful, Joanne, on the social media platform that is Facebook, because the merest glimpse of a nipple can send some people scrambling for their ‘report’ tab faster than they get to church every Sunday. So here they are. The top image was shot on film using an old Pentax SP1000, which I now realise has a light leak, but I think it adds to the look? The […]

Fade to grey

February 16, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

The temperature here on the Isle of Man was about 6 degrees yesterday, so as well as being beautiful and professional, I shall add ‘brave’ to the list when describing Beckii Cruel. Me and the rest of the team were kitted-out in coats and scarves, Beckii got to stand around in a thin dress (a dress that she made herself, I might add). This is about my 5th time shooting with Beckii, she’s always great to work with. The plan […]

Cafe Plaza Nueva

December 24, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

The Cafeteria Restaurante Plaza Nueva, Seron, Spain – my office for most of January 2015. I’m heading down to the southern Mediterranean to shoot a project on British Expatriates who are, for one reason or another, living full-time away from their country of origin. I’m not really interested in the people who are living there for ‘one reason’, one reason being the weather. No, I want to meet the people who are possibly hiding there for ‘another’ reason. I have […]

That was, almost, 2014…

December 14, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

I know it’s not quite over, but I don’t think I’ll have much opportunity to post over the next few weeks, so I thought I’d do this now… Over the last year, as a rough estimate, I’ve photographed about 250 different people, some of them friends, some of them strangers who became friends. The images here are my particular favourites. I can distinctly remember the moment I pressed the shutter on every image, what we’d being talking about and even […]
