The white squatters camp at Krugersdorp has grown onto the side of a much larger, blacks only township. These images were taken in the ‘transition area’ between the two settlements. Despite being there to photograph the white residents, I did take a lot of photos of the neighbouring black kids too. ‘Friday 16th March – Driving back through Pretoria I see an immaculately dressed black woman crossing the road, her obviously expensive designer clothes compliment her flawless complexion. From a […]

The things I saw (Tokyo) #9

May 3, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

I remember, years ago, falling asleep on the sofa whilst listening to a Travis CD, ‘The Man who’. I must have gone-off around about the end of ‘She’s so strange’, what followed seemed to be an eternity of silence, then the secret track kicked in – well I nearly soiled my pants – I’d listened to this CD dozens of times and had no idea there was a secret track. I never listened to it again after that, I was […]

The things I saw #8

October 29, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

‘Saturday 26th September – We’re parked outside the Premier Inn on Dover seafront. We’re due to get the 1am ferry to Dunkirk on Monday morning, but we raced down from Norfolk to see if we could get a last-minute deal on the tunnel… no such luck. The cheapest they can do is £178, one way… the man at the ticket office obviously misunderstood and thought I wanted to buy the actual tunnel. So we’ve decided to hang around and get […]

The things I saw #7

October 28, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

More random visual meanderings and scribbles with the pen and the camera. All images made using an Olympus MjuII 35mm compact and Kodak Portra 160 film. Developing and scanning by the rather excellent UK Film Lab After driving over 4000 miles in a month, this much I do know – most people think that the Manx flag I hang in the front window of my camper at campsites is a Nazi Swastika or the white supremacy sign. This, combined with my […]

The things I saw #6

October 28, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

More random visual meanderings and scribbles with the pen and the camera. All images made using an Olympus MjuII 35mm compact and Kodak Portra 160 film. Today I’ve realised that I get as anxious about my equipment as I do every other aspect of my life… I love the Olympus MjuII… I’m actually starting to wonder if I should just shoot everything, all my projects, using this one camera? I have two of these little compacts now – one I […]

The things I saw #5

October 27, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

More random visual meanderings and scribbles with the pen and the camera. All images made using an Olympus MjuII 35mm compact and Kodak Portra 160 film. Something I do know – free internet is very common in Spain. Rare in the UK. ‘Monday 19th October, Morecambe, Lancashire – I went to the Steam Packet ferry office at Heysham to see if I could get on an earlier sailing home. I told myself that if it was going to cost less […]

The Things I saw #4

October 26, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

Since returning home last week, following a string of unfortunate incidents, things have begun to gradually improve… my ex-wife Helen told me they would, twice. My continuing stories about campsites in Spain, and their perpetual residents, has stirred-up quite a bit of interest… I’ve been contacted by a couple of agents who’d like me to go back to Benidorm and extend the story. I must admit that the idea of going back to that area wasn’t something I had planned… […]

The things I saw #3

More random visual meanderings and scribbles with the pen and the camera. All images made using an Olympus MjuII 35mm compact and Kodak Portra 160 film. Film was developed and scanned at UK Film Lab. Oh, a tip for anyone driving and using the French toll roads – they don’t accept MasterCard Prepaid… ‘Saturday 17th October, somewhere between Andorra and Chamonix – I’m covered in bites – all over my legs, arms and back. I’d assumed they were mosquito bites from […]

The things I saw #1

October 24, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

Today is the last day of British summertime, tomorrow morning the clocks will be set an hour backward and the Isle of Man will be plunged in to six months of perpetual darkness, cold and damp… okay, it’s not quite that bad, but that’s how it always feels – goodbye, greens and blues. Hello, grey. As my good friend pointed-out a couple of days ago – “This is never a good time of year for you…”. She’s right, as usual. […]

60x90mm

May 21, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

I finally got my latest batch of films back, I’d split a couple of batches between two labs – my usual, long-standing lab, Peak Imaging, and Mein Film Lab who are based in Germany. Both labs have provided good quality scans, although I think Mein’s are slightly better…however, Peak Imaging are quicker and cheaper, so I’ve yet to decide whether to switch, but I’m impatient and tight-fisted, which may win it over. These are relatively low resolution scans from 6x9cm […]
