5840 Days

January 2, 2017 by Phil Kneen Photography

I can’t believe our daughter is Sixteen! Jess can now join the armed forces, invest in a cash ISA, move out of the family home (but if under 17, social services may apply for a care order), give consent to medical, dental and surgical treatment, be detained in police custody and get married. Jess, fortunately, has inherited most of her good points off her Mum, Helen, so she’s already pretty well sorted for life, although she did inherit my poor […]

Lost and Found

September 16, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

I found a bundle of photographs yesterday, Fuji Instax Mini photographs, using a camera I’d bought in Tokyo on my last day of a recent visit to Japan with my fifteen-year-old daughter, Jess. We had a load of cash left at the end of the trip, so we went shopping at a huge camera store in the Shibuya district. I love finding photos I’d forgotten about, and I miss Tokyo, a lot. All the images here were made within about […]

The things I saw (Tokyo) #9

May 3, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

I remember, years ago, falling asleep on the sofa whilst listening to a Travis CD, ‘The Man who’. I must have gone-off around about the end of ‘She’s so strange’, what followed seemed to be an eternity of silence, then the secret track kicked in – well I nearly soiled my pants – I’d listened to this CD dozens of times and had no idea there was a secret track. I never listened to it again after that, I was […]

The things I saw (Tokyo) #7

April 27, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

‘There’s a lot of shit talked about photography, but you go out, take a photo of something you like, if you enjoy that image then it’s a good photo. It’s really that simple’  I wrote that when I first started this blog, and five years later it’s a statement I still stand by, even more so now. This is the last in the ‘The things I saw (Tokyo)’ series, I love every single shot, but I’ve saved my personal favourites until […]

The things I saw (Tokyo) #6

April 26, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

People warned me that Tokyo is expensive, so I went prepared, but to be honest, it wasn’t. With the exchange rate the way it is at the moment (British £ – Japanese Yen), it means most things are cheaper than in the UK – a really good meal for two, with beer or wine (for me, not Jess, she’s only 15… although she looks older and was offered alcohol in almost every restaurant we went to) can be had for […]

The things I saw (Tokyo) #5

April 26, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

An interesting fact about Japan – you can’t disable your cell phone camera shutter sound – even when you have the device on silent, it makes an audible ‘shutter sound’. Although it isn’t required by law, it was taken up voluntarily by all Japanese cellphone vendors. It is also rumoured that within the next year camera manufactures will introduce the same feature and disable silent modes with firmware updates and in new models. Even so, there are still plenty of […]

The things I saw (Tokyo) #4

April 25, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

“Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it” All the images here were made using an Olympus MjuII 35mm compact and various film (Fuji Superia 400/800 and Kodak Gold 400, mainly). Processed and scanned at UK Film Lab.

The things I saw (Tokyo) #3

April 24, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

More visual meanderings and photographic sketches from a recent trip to Japan… Eating in Tokyo can be problematic, especially if you stray merrily off the tourist route, like we did… a lot of restaurants have a digital ordering and pre-pay system – you go in, select your food, you get a ticket and go and sit down – then your food arrives, but because the entire menu was only in Japanese, you don’t actually know what you ordered, but the […]

The things I saw (Tokyo) #2

April 23, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

More visual meanderings and photographic sketches from a recent trip to Japan… Me and Jess both tried to sleep on our first night in Tokyo, but the 9 hour time difference was telling our brains it was the middle of the day, not 4am… so we got up, got dressed, left our hotel at 5am and headed to Kawasaki train station. By 6am the station was already quite busy, but for our first 20 minute commute into Tokyo we managed […]

Tokyo holiday snaps

April 9, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

I’ve been in Tokyo for the last two weeks, which is why my blog has been quiet. I shot a lot of film while I was there, mostly on my little Olympus MjuII compact – I did take my Nikon F100 and a couple of lenses, and a Fuji X100T digital compact, but after a couple of days hauling even a relatively small bag around I admitted defeat and left the hotel every morning with just the compact and my […]
