Instax Gratification

December 8, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

Although my adoration for instant film comes in waves, my love for it will never die. At the moment I’m surfing a tsunami of infatuation for Fuji Instax, the only truly instant film still available. Obviously, I’m aware of the existence of other ‘instant’ emulsions – but peel apart is hardly accessible to the masses, and the glacial rate at which Impossible Project’s Polaroid replacement develops can hardly place any of its films in the ‘instant’ category. I’ve been using […]

Shake it like a Polaroid picture…

June 5, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

I sent a batch of films off to be developed in Germany about three weeks ago – they were supposed to be developed and scanned, the negatives hermetically stored and the high-resolution files emailed back to me, all within 10 working days. This has not been the case. This isn’t the kind of tardy, lacklustre performance I’d expect from our super-efficient Euro-neighbours, but then I realised that half the population of Germany are here on the Isle of Man, watching […]

Instant Gratification #2

May 30, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

A new toy arrived yesterday – the Fuji Instax Wide 300. I’ve used an older incarnation of this camera over the last few years, the 210. I think the underwear in both models is basically the same, however the outer garments are quite different. Fuji have given the 300 a retro, rangefinder look, which is actually quite pleasing to the eye. I find the 300 slightly easier to use too, the mechanism to change the two focus distances is on […]

Instant Hit

December 27, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

I’ve no idea how they make instant film at the Impossible Project Polaroid factory over in Holland, and to be honest, I don’t think they do either. Over the last year I’ve shot maybe 30 boxes of their Color 600 instant film, I don’t think one box has given me the same results as the next, or the one before it, ever. I’m not sure if there’s any correlation between output consistency and the fact that the factory is based […]

Shoot. Raw.

August 30, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

Anyone who knows me will know that I like cameras; but not in an obsessive, collecting way, I just don’t like to get stagnant by using the same equipment all the time. Having said that, for commercial work I am pretty much set in my ways, I know what I like and know I like the Nikon D800E and 35mm 1.4G combo’. For personal work, it’s different – I’ve got a couple of compact 35mm film cameras on the go […]

Instant Gratification?

January 31, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

For the last couple of weeks I’ve been experimenting with Impossible Project instant film, I’ve shot a few boxes of the new colour version, and I have to say it was love at first sight. The whole look, the weird hues and colour casts are everything I’d expected. I’ve ordered a few more boxes of the colour version – we’re going steady. Now then, the black and white type…I’m not so sure, I certainly didn’t rush out and buy an […]

Don’t fake it.

January 29, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

First of all, I’ve had a few comments about the new format and layout of this blog, it seems that people miss the old Gridspace theme because “It looked less like a blog and more like a website”…but that’s what this is – a blog, a dumping-ground for my photographic meanderings and thoughts. I do have a dedicated portfolio website in the pipeline, so if you just want to look at photographs without my ramblings, it’ll be up and running […]

Instant Success

January 21, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

I’m a naturally impatient person, so from the outset I always imagined that digital photography would be my ideal medium, but that hasn’t really been the case. For the last few years digital photography has been an itch that I’ve never quite been able to scratch, there’s always lacked the sense of total satisfaction that I only ever get when I shoot film. At the moment I’m very itchy, and there’s only one thing that can get up the back […]

“Shake it like a Polaroid picture”

January 16, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

For the next few weeks I’m concentrating on shooting images for an exhibition on the Isle of Man at the end of March, in true Phil Kneen fashion I’m leaving everything until the last-minute! Without the help of a few good friends it wouldn’t be happening. Yesterday I had an interesting shoot with the very beautiful, Lorna Cubbon. Lorna reminds me of a cross between a young Kate Moss and Christina Ricci, she’s also a lot taller than I’d imagined! […]

Photographic Methadone.

November 15, 2012 by Phil Kneen Photography

If Kodak Tr-X is my heroin, then Fuji Instax is my Methadone. Instax keeps me going in between hits when I’m waiting for film to be developed. Fortunately, Instax isn’t anywhere near as expensive as class A drugs and it certainly isn’t as damaging to your health – you can pick-up a good second-hand Fuji Instax for less than £50. I get my film off Amazon for £15 for a pack of 20 shots. Each shot is a truly individual. A […]
