Baggage Allowance

August 10, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

When I was a kid my parents never used to tell me I was going on holiday… I’d just become over-excited and unbearable for the days or weeks before departure. I remember, on several occasions, getting home from infant school and being asked if I’d had a wee and a poo – then being bundled into the back of the family VW Beetle, falling asleep almost immediately and waking-up, hours later, in a campsite in Scotland or North Wales, or […]

Scandinavian Wide Boy

June 25, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

I took my plastic Holga Pano Wide 6x12cm film camera to Norway with me, plus 20 rolls of film, but I only shot two rolls, one of colour and one of black & white (Kodak Portra 800 and Kodak Tri-X 400). Developed and scanned at Peak Imaging. I wish I’d shot more film now…

That was the year that was…

December 17, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

Juan McGuinness & Orca – my favourite image of 2013. Below are my runner-up favourites. All made using film and digital, 35mm and medium format, compacts and iPhones. Thank you to every single person who has helped me out over the past year, both in front of and behind the camera. Happy Christmas!

Holga wide

September 1, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

If I ever happen to be stranded on a desert island, an unlikely scenario, but let’s go with it, and for some reason I’m stuck with one camera and a bag of one type of film, what would they be? I won’t waste your time going through the cameras that almost made the number one spot, I’ll just come straight out with it – the Holga 120 Pan and a big bag of Kodak Tri-X 400 film. This camera cost […]

Berlin Bound

July 18, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

I’m not sure if it’s the unexpected hot weather on the Isle of Man, but I’ve had a lot of offers from people, male and female, to model nude. I’m not complaining. This is artist and photographer, Hazel Walsh. I made these images over the space of a couple of hours using a mix of digital and film (Holga 6×6 and 6×12, a Leica R6 and a cheap Nikon compact 35mm). Hazel is leaving the Isle of Man in a […]

Standard Issue.

July 7, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

The humble, and often under-utilised, standard lens – the 50mm (or 35mm, 80mm or 150mm, depending on what format you’re shooting…). Every camera used to come with one, normally a 50mm 1.8, it was the first thing eager snappers wanted to replace, for some reason? A lot of people are very surprised to learn that 90% of my images are made using the standard lens. I love them. I used to shoot a lot of stuff on a 17-40mm, but […]

Random Eyes

July 4, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

Sometimes I don’t want to write anything, I just want to post a few random photos that I’ve taken over the last few days. Today is one of those days. I take a camera everywhere – to the pub, to the corner cafe for a hangover breakfast and while walking my dog, Leica, along the coast. I photograph my feet… All these images were made using a Holga 120 Pan/Kodak Tri-X film or a Ricoh GR1/Kodacolor Gold 400 film

Chinese Binge

June 11, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

I’ve neglected film photography over the last few weeks, not out of choice, it’s just that the type of work I’ve been doing has been better suited to digital. I have missed film though, so last week I went on a two-day film shooting binge – I put a couple of cheap Chinese Holgas and a load of film into my bag and shot everything that caught my eye. All the wide shots here were made on the Holga Pan […]

Canadorama

April 29, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

All Images made with a Holga 120 Pano 6x12cm camera and Fuji Acros 100 film in the Hamilton (Ontario) and Yellowknife (NWT) areas of Canada. I wasn’t going to take this camera with me, but I’m so glad I did now. The scenery, the weather, everything lent itself to grungy monochromatic images like these. It’s got me thinking about experimenting with a bit of pinhole photography… I’m starting the long process of scanning and cataloguing 70+ sheets of negatives from my […]

Road-trippin’ with Holga

April 28, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

My two favourite pastimes – photography and road-trips, they go hand in hand. Road tripping in the Northwest Territories of Canada is fairly simple, because there really aren’t that many roads, but they are VERY long roads. I didn’t actually drive that far, just Yellowknife to Rae/Edzo, I was in a truck that my most excellent friend, and fellow photographer, Pat Kane had lent me, so I didn’t want to take the piss. Had I have been in a hire […]
