One.

January 20, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

“I do have a personal discipline of only taking one picture, of one thing…not two” – William Eggleston “I’ve never been able to take a picture with a digital camera, because I look at it on the back of the screen, then I try and do a better one, then a better one…then I don’t know what I’m doing” – Richard Billingham “The photographer has been a slave to the camera for a long time. Photography is not about the […]

Scandinavian Wide Boy

June 25, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

I took my plastic Holga Pano Wide 6x12cm film camera to Norway with me, plus 20 rolls of film, but I only shot two rolls, one of colour and one of black & white (Kodak Portra 800 and Kodak Tri-X 400). Developed and scanned at Peak Imaging. I wish I’d shot more film now…

Tres cervezas por favor…

April 8, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

It’s been a fairly quiet couple of weeks for me, my exhibition is already half way through its one month showing, it appears to have been received quite well, but negative feedback rarely gets back to the person who really needs to hear it. Last week I got some more shots of the very beautiful, Ciara, beautiful and extremely hard – I had her standing in a large sea pool, which I made her completely submerge in to get her […]

December 17, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

Juan McGuinness & Orca – my favourite image of 2013. Below are my runner-up favourites. All made using film and digital, 35mm and medium format, compacts and iPhones. Thank you to every single person who has helped me out over the past year, both in front of and behind the camera. Happy Christmas!

Holga wide

September 1, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

If I ever happen to be stranded on a desert island, an unlikely scenario, but let’s go with it, and for some reason I’m stuck with one camera and a bag of one type of film, what would they be? I won’t waste your time going through the cameras that almost made the number one spot, I’ll just come straight out with it – the Holga 120 Pan and a big bag of Kodak Tri-X 400 film. This camera cost […]

Berlin Bound

July 18, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

I’m not sure if it’s the unexpected hot weather on the Isle of Man, but I’ve had a lot of offers from people, male and female, to model nude. I’m not complaining. This is artist and photographer, Hazel Walsh. I made these images over the space of a couple of hours using a mix of digital and film (Holga 6×6 and 6×12, a Leica R6 and a cheap Nikon compact 35mm). Hazel is leaving the Isle of Man in a […]

Standard Issue.

July 7, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

The humble, and often under-utilised, standard lens – the 50mm (or 35mm, 80mm or 150mm, depending on what format you’re shooting…). Every camera used to come with one, normally a 50mm 1.8, it was the first thing eager snappers wanted to replace, for some reason? A lot of people are very surprised to learn that 90% of my images are made using the standard lens. I love them. I used to shoot a lot of stuff on a 17-40mm, but […]

Toast? Or Corn Flakes?

June 15, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

The film v digital argument is as pointless as asking, “Which is better, toast or Corn Flakes?” – they both taste great and they both have their own place at the breakfast table. This week I’ve been eating toast and cornflakes…AND yogurt! This week I having been shooting with a Fuji X-Pro1, a Holga GCFN and a Holga 120 Pan

Characters and Cars

March 24, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

This time next week I’m heading back to the Northwest Territories of Canada to continue shooting a long-term project I’m working on in the area. I’ll be spending most of my time based in Yellowknife, but I’ll also be visiting Hay River, a 40 minute flight South from YK in a DC3 aeroplane that’s older than my dad. I’ll also be heading north, hopefully on a more modern plane, to the town of Inuvik, which is situated on the frozen […]

R.I.P, Miss Holga…

March 9, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

I smashed my Holga beyond repair today, even duct tape couldn’t save it. I went to kneel down to take a photograph, as I did I dropped the camera and kneeled on it, my full seventeen and a half stone concentrated on the Holga with the road beneath. It stood no chance whatsoever, the lens pushed into the body, smashing it in to about ten pieces. I’d claim on the insurance, but hey, I can get a new one for […]
