Coming Up For Air…

December 5, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

Manx music legend, Davy Knowles, is back on the Isle of Man and I had the pleasure of spending the day with him, shooting portraits around various locations. Davy, who now lives and works out of Chicago, is back on home soil to perform a gig at The Gaiety Theatre in Douglas. (Try and get tickets, but I think they sold-out pretty fast!) I’ve photographed Davy a few times over the last few years, the first time was at the […]

All for one…

November 16, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

This week I photographed JC Callister for my upcoming project that will document estranged fathers. I used JC as a bit of an experiment to decide what camera format I’d be shooting the series on, these are the results. I’m very single-minded when it comes to shooting a project, once I’ve started I have to stick to the same camera, the same lens, and where possible, the same film. The shots here were made using (top to bottom) Fuji X-Pro1/35mm, Pentax 67/90mm/Kodak Portra 400 […]

Simply The Best?

May 25, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

I was talking to a college student this week, I asked him why I hadn’t seen any of his work recently, his reply bemused me – “I’m getting a Canon 5D mark three in a few weeks, so I’m not shooting anything until I get that, it’s like ten times better than the camera I’m using now…I want to shoot my ideas on the best kit…should I get the seventy to two-hundred?” Amazing. This talented young artist has actually put […]

Scar Tissue

May 9, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

This week I’ve finally started a project that I’ve been meaning to do for years, it’s an issue that’s always fascinated me – scars. I posted an update on my Facebook page asking for people with scars and a story to go with them. I was expecting to get maybe 15 or 20 people – at the time of writing this I’ve got 159 volunteers! Some of the scars are accidental, some are medical. One lady has asked me to photograph […]

Who knew?

April 25, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

I recently read an article in The British Journal of Photography that Sebastião Salgado, arguably the worlds finest photojournalist, now shoots all of his work on digital, the article amazed me, not the fact that Seb has finally caught-up with technology, but his working process – he shoots his images on digital cameras, then edits the files using DxO film pack, a £75 software, to put a Kodak Tri-X black and white ‘look’ on the images. Most photographers would leave […]

Home again.

April 18, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

All the images here were shot on a Canon G15 digital compact camera (which I picked-up in Toronto for CAN$399. The cheapest UK price I can find is £429, so I’m thinking I got a bit of a bargain) I’m actually quite liking this little camera… So, that’s another shoot over. Two and a half weeks and 79 rolls of film later, I’m back home, the films have been sent off to be developed at Peak Imaging and I’m recovering […]

Buffalo Joe and an Eagle.

April 16, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

All the images in this article were shot using an iPhone 4S or a Canon G15 compact camera. I’m shooting a project in Canada at the moment, on film… Too cold for film. So, I’ve been shooting a lot on my iPhone and a Canon G15 compact. This weekend I flew down to Hay River on a Buffalo Airways DC3, it’s my second time on this plane, but always an amazing experience. Hay River is a small town about 45 minutes […]

Thirty Below, Up North.

April 8, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

Just a quick project update. All images in this article were made using either an iPhone 4S (first 4) or a Canon G15 digital compact. All project images are being shot on a Mamiya 7II film camera. There isn’t going to be a lot of blog writing on this trip as I only have my iPhone and Nexus tablet with me, both of which a very difficult to type on! I’ve actually been in Canada for a week now, however, […]
