‘horses for courses…

May 22, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

Both the images above of musician, Mae Challis, were made using a digital Canon EOS 5DmkIII and 50mm f1.0 lens – a lot of people think I’ve got this whole ‘anti-digital’ thing going-on – I haven’t, if I shot all my work, personal and commercial, on film I’d be bankrupt within about a week! I think people mistake digital and film photography as being the same medium, but it’s like saying pens and pencils are the same – they look […]

60x90mm

May 21, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

I finally got my latest batch of films back, I’d split a couple of batches between two labs – my usual, long-standing lab, Peak Imaging, and Mein Film Lab who are based in Germany. Both labs have provided good quality scans, although I think Mein’s are slightly better…however, Peak Imaging are quicker and cheaper, so I’ve yet to decide whether to switch, but I’m impatient and tight-fisted, which may win it over. These are relatively low resolution scans from 6x9cm […]

Fade to grey

February 16, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

The temperature here on the Isle of Man was about 6 degrees yesterday, so as well as being beautiful and professional, I shall add ‘brave’ to the list when describing Beckii Cruel. Me and the rest of the team were kitted-out in coats and scarves, Beckii got to stand around in a thin dress (a dress that she made herself, I might add). This is about my 5th time shooting with Beckii, she’s always great to work with. The plan […]

Sans Maquillage…

November 27, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

I was up early this morning for a photo-session with Beckii Cruel, but not as early as Beckii, the beach where we did the shoot is 30 seconds walk from my house, Beckii had to drive from her home, 16 miles away. It was dark when we started, I’d hoped for a more dramatic sunrise, but it wasn’t to be. The light was still great though. I’ve worked with Beckii a few times now, usually with professional makeup artists and […]

“I don’t get it?”

September 22, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

“I don’t get it?” – I get that statement a lot about my images, people want to know what it all means, why are there two naked ladies in the background of that photo of Lee? Why are they wrapped in cling film? Why is he just sat in his bedroom?  Well, and I hope I’m not going to disappoint anyone – there’s no hidden meanings, I just thought the naked ladies would look cool, cling film looks nice, aesthetically pleasing. […]

Second time lucky…

August 22, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

I first shot Beckii Cruel about three months ago, it was a Sunday morning, which I recall very clearly because I’d been at a party until 4am and slept in the back of my van, I was woken by my PA, Ciara, at about 9.30am, the shoot was at 10am. I drove the 2 miles from  where I’d crashed-out to pick Ciara up, she administered orange juice and paracetamol and declared me unfit to drive, so she did. When we […]

Alive and kicking

June 7, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

I’ve recently been accused of not shooting film anymore, of abandoning something that I fought to save for so long. Well it’s not true, film is alive and well and I’m still using it. Okay the price of film has become astronomical, it’s almost doubled in price over the last year, but if I’m careful, that’s not a problem, I just concentrate more and take half as many photos. But yes, I’m still shooting film, I always have either a […]

Midnight Sun

June 3, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

I’ll tell you something – if you want to meet loads of really interesting, diverse, amusing, unusual, beautiful humans, get yourself a camera. The camera is a passport to the world of other people, people are never the same, so no shoot is ever the same – variety is the spice of life. In the last two weeks alone I have photographed 19 different individuals, and individual they are. Highlights of the last couple of weeks have been photographing Thurston Arrowsmith […]
