Joanne

February 27, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

It really pains me that I can’t share these images of the stunningly beautiful, Joanne, on the social media platform that is Facebook, because the merest glimpse of a nipple can send some people scrambling for their ‘report’ tab faster than they get to church every Sunday. So here they are. The top image was shot on film using an old Pentax SP1000, which I now realise has a light leak, but I think it adds to the look? The […]

36x24mm

February 8, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

My latest return to shooting film is lasting a bit longer than expected, I normally shoot a few rolls then slip back into the sterile convenience of digital, but not this time! I always have a film compact in my camera bag, either an Olympus MjuII (which all the images here were made with) or a treasured Minolta Hi-Matic that a good friend bought for me last autumn. One unpleasant thing I have noticed is that the price of film […]

New Year Resolution.

January 1, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

I said to my friend, “If you’re ever in the pound shop and you see any rolls of 35mm film, buy a load”, well she did, about 50 rolls, she even separated the 24 exposure films and only took the 36 exposure rolls. Excellent work! So for the last few months I’ve been shooting a lot of Agfa Vista 200. A few days ago, in the pub, photographer friend of mine started telling me that it’s actually made by Fuji or someone, […]

Serendipity…

December 2, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

I have to confess that this image was the result of almost complete fluke. I was doing a shoot with the beautiful Fudge Plaatjies, mostly shooting digital, but toward the end of the session I thought I’d get a few frames on film, so out came my favourite 35mm camera – the Minolta Hi-Matic GF…which it turns-out, and not for the first time, I hadn’t loaded properly. Toward the end of the roll the film jammed, but I carried-on trying […]

The Celluloid Closet

November 9, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

“Why do you shoot film?” – I get asked that question at least once a week, it’s never easy to explain. I shoot differently when I have a film camera in my hand, everything flows differently, there’s no distraction with looking what you’ve shot, so the whole thing seems to flow better. I think subjects react differently too, I shoot mainly with a Minolta Hi-Matic and a tiny Olympus MjuII, neither of which look in the slightest bit professional, I’m […]

“Did you shoot any film?”

October 23, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

Whenever I’m shooting on digital, whether it’s commercial or personal, my PA always tells me to shoot some film too, and she always makes sure I have! My go-to film camera for the past few months has been an old Olympus Mju-II 35mm compact (recently replaced by a Minolta Hi-Matic), it’s always in my bag and I always try to use it whenever I can (honestly I do, Ciara…). I use whatever film is cheapest, for the last few months […]

1984

October 22, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

I was 13/14 years old in 1984, my interest in photography hadn’t surfaced and wouldn’t do for another couple of years, but it was the year the Minolta Hi-Matic GF was released. Two years later it was still being produced and had probably sold in its hundreds of thousands, but it wouldn’t have caught my eye, I was in that first stage of photography when I honestly believed that the more expensive the camera, the better your photos would be, […]

Sea Legs

September 6, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

I started shooting a long-term project this week documenting the Isle of Man fishing industry, I hope to be out with various trawlers over the next 8 to 12 months. I started the project by going out on the MFV Serpico, a small scallop dredger based in Douglas, skippered by Juan Canipa, it was an amazing experience, although I did suffer badly with sea-sickness (as you can see from the photo below, I spent a fair amount of time trying […]

Trente-cinq millimètre

August 4, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

I get asked, at least once a week, “How do I make my images look as though they were shot on film? What’s the best film look software?”. Well, the answer to that question is always the same – “Buy a film camera, buy some film, and shoot film” To be honest, I haven’t shot film for a while, so I took my Olympus Mju-II and a few rolls of Agfa Vista+ 200 film on holiday to France with me. […]
