Turn right at Warsaw…

October 23, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

This week there’s been a slight change of plan – I’m not driving to Moscow anymore, I don’t fancy the idea of traversing Belarus, I’ve heard a lot of bad things about the country. Also, visas are needed for Belarus and Russia, which would add nearly £1000 to the cost of a trip that I’m already planning on a very tight budget. So, I’m driving to Crimea in Ukraine instead, it’s about the same distance and I’ll get to go […]

Road Trip ’14

October 15, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

This week I’ve started planning my next big adventure, a road-trip of epic proportions – The Isle of Man to Moscow and back – a 4000 mile round trip. I’ve been all over the world, but never this part of the world, and what better way to see it? This probably isn’t a lot of people’s idea of fun, but I can’t think of anything better; load a vehicle with supplies and just drive, stopping off whenever and wherever you […]

Acting-up

September 14, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

This weekend sees the second annual film festival here on the Isle of Man. I’ll be writing more about it on Monday, after the event has finished and when I’ve recovered from a rather ‘fun filled’ day-trip to Liverpool yesterday… These are portraits I made of two lead actors from films being shown at the festival, Jessica Francis (Being Nice) and Raymond Barry (Barry Brown). I love working with actors, because they know exactly how to look, it makes things […]

The skin you’re in.

August 14, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

‘A portrait is a representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer’ This is Wikipedia’s rather old-fashioned definition as to […]

All or Nothing.

June 17, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

I don’t know why, and I certainly don’t know what it says about me as a person, but I can not leave film in a camera; when I load a roll, whether it be 36 images on 35mm or 10 on 6x7cm, as soon as I start shooting I have to finish it. I don’t load film into a camera until I see something I want to shoot, so I can be driving along a road, see something that catches […]

Characters and Cars

March 24, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

This time next week I’m heading back to the Northwest Territories of Canada to continue shooting a long-term project I’m working on in the area. I’ll be spending most of my time based in Yellowknife, but I’ll also be visiting Hay River, a 40 minute flight South from YK in a DC3 aeroplane that’s older than my dad. I’ll also be heading north, hopefully on a more modern plane, to the town of Inuvik, which is situated on the frozen […]

Goodbye, 2012

December 23, 2012 by Phil Kneen Photography

…and goodbye, digital. Of all the shots I took in 2012, these are my favourites. Only the first two are digital, the rest are all taken on film – 35mm, medium format and Fuji Instax instant.

We are family.

May 1, 2012 by Phil Kneen Photography

My offspring – Matt, Ric and Jess. We were out for a very rare family walk last week, it’s not often you see all the Kneen’s in one go! I shot two rolls of Kodak Portra on my Mamiya 7II. When we got back I noticed that I’d knocked the exposure compensation dial to  -2 stops, but I wasn’t sure when it had happened? I almost dumped both rolls. I’m glad I didn’t! I’m not doing much in the way […]

35mm London

April 7, 2012 by Phil Kneen Photography

I had the most fantastic long weekend in London last week with my lovely wife, Helen. We did all the tourist things – London Eye, The British Museum, The War Museum (where I saw the amazing Don McCullin photography exhibition), we ate-out and spent a lot of time in various pubs with good friends, Amber and Loz. I really didn’t want to come home! I took three cameras, a Mamiya 7II medium format, a Nikon TW20 compact and an Olympus Mju II compact and 10 rolls […]
