Boston 26

April 8, 2018 by Phil Kneen Photography

The white squatters camp at Krugersdorp has grown onto the side of a much larger, blacks only township. These images were taken in the ‘transition area’ between the two settlements. Despite being there to photograph the white residents, I did take a lot of photos of the neighbouring black kids too. ‘Friday 16th March – Driving back through Pretoria I see an immaculately dressed black woman crossing the road, her obviously expensive designer clothes compliment her flawless complexion. From a […]

Plakkerskamp

March 30, 2018 by Phil Kneen Photography

I was in South Africa for a week in March, shooting a photo essay, ‘Plakkerskamp’, a project to document the lives of white people living in the numerous squatter camps in and around Johannesburg and Pretoria since the end of Apartheid, 24 years ago. I have a lot of images to sort and various articles to write, so I thought I’d publish a few photographs now to ‘get the ball rolling’. South Africa was such an astonishing place; it felt […]

Lost and Found

September 16, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

I found a bundle of photographs yesterday, Fuji Instax Mini photographs, using a camera I’d bought in Tokyo on my last day of a recent visit to Japan with my fifteen-year-old daughter, Jess. We had a load of cash left at the end of the trip, so we went shopping at a huge camera store in the Shibuya district. I love finding photos I’d forgotten about, and I miss Tokyo, a lot. All the images here were made within about […]

Norway Bonus Track

May 25, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

After every trip I go on, and shoot loads of film, there’s always at least one camera that still has half a roll in when I get back. So, it’s left for a week or two, then I finish the roll as part of another shoot and send the films off. Every time I get the scans back and I have a rush of excitement because there’s a handful of images I’d totally forgotten about – another of the many […]

On The Road

May 6, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

“Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life – and travel – leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks – on your body or on your heart – are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt.” Anthony Bourdain “The saddest journey in the world is the one that follows a precise itinerary. Then you’re not a traveler. You’re a fucking tourist.” […]

The things I saw (Norway)

May 4, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

The things I saw series – my personal snapshots of travels away from home normally come weeks, often months apart. This latest one from Norway comes almost back-to-back with Japan simply because I returned from Japan, stayed home for a day, then went to Norway (more accurately, England, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway…). This latest trip was a 6000 road trip to shoot digital landscapes to sell as stock images, but as usual, I took my Olympus […]

The things I saw (Tokyo) #9

May 3, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

I remember, years ago, falling asleep on the sofa whilst listening to a Travis CD, ‘The Man who’. I must have gone-off around about the end of ‘She’s so strange’, what followed seemed to be an eternity of silence, then the secret track kicked in – well I nearly soiled my pants – I’d listened to this CD dozens of times and had no idea there was a secret track. I never listened to it again after that, I was […]

The things I saw (Tokyo) #7

April 27, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

‘There’s a lot of shit talked about photography, but you go out, take a photo of something you like, if you enjoy that image then it’s a good photo. It’s really that simple’  I wrote that when I first started this blog, and five years later it’s a statement I still stand by, even more so now. This is the last in the ‘The things I saw (Tokyo)’ series, I love every single shot, but I’ve saved my personal favourites until […]

The things I saw (Tokyo) #6

April 26, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

People warned me that Tokyo is expensive, so I went prepared, but to be honest, it wasn’t. With the exchange rate the way it is at the moment (British £ – Japanese Yen), it means most things are cheaper than in the UK – a really good meal for two, with beer or wine (for me, not Jess, she’s only 15… although she looks older and was offered alcohol in almost every restaurant we went to) can be had for […]
