Mae Challis

February 20, 2018 by Phil Kneen Photography

I had a bit of a change last week, photography wise. Well, a total change, to be honest; photographing Singer Songwriter, Mae Challis, is probably the opposite end of the spectrum to gnarly scallop fishermen. I photographed Mae in what turned out to be, thanks to its full-length, south-facing windows, an excellent natural daylight studio – Noa Bake House cafe. At the time of writing this, I’m waiting for the medium format, 6x7cm scans to land in my inbox. The […]

An early morning with Matt Creer

April 20, 2017 by Phil Kneen Photography

For the second time in about three years, I’ve been working with Matt Creer, shooting the artwork for his latest album. I liked the photographs we made in back then, which I shot on digital. However, we are both in agreement that these recent images, shot on film, unquestionably have a depth and an almost fourth dimension that the 2014 shots lacked. Photo sessions with Matt are always enjoyable, despite the odd 5am start; in a city, this wouldn’t represent […]

The Welsh Streets

March 23, 2017 by Phil Kneen Photography

When Richard told me that we were doing a photo-shoot in the Welsh Streets, I got a wave of nostalgic excitement; I haven’t been to Wales for years. In the space of thirty seconds I had the entire trip planned in my head – leave Liverpool early, stop at for breakfast at the greasy-spoon food trailer on the A55, just south of Chester, for a full English breakfast in a bap and a pint of tea and then be in […]

The Circle

March 20, 2017 by Phil Kneen Photography

Last month, I had the pleasure of meeting and photographing Stephen Macartney, Peter McVeigh, Katie Richardson and Warren Attwell, four Irish musicians who form part of the Northern Irish Singer-Songwriters Circle. My good friend and music promoter, Jonno Gollow, brought the four over to my hometown of Peel, on the Isle of Man, to hold a songwriters workshop during the day and to a very well attended gig at the Peel Centenary Centre in the evening. Jonno is singlehandedly […]

Jarrod Dickenson

February 17, 2016 by Phil Kneen Photography

“Storytelling is something of a Texas tradition. Tall hats and even taller tales are woven into the fabric of The Lone Star State, and singer-songwriter, Jarrod Dickenson can spin a yarn with the best of them. Hailing from Waco, now based in Brooklyn, Dickenson spends most of his time on the road bringing his own particular brand of soulful americana to a wide variety of music loving audiences around the globe” All images made with Nikon F100, 28mm and 50mm […]

The Wall

June 19, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

I like walls… I don’t know what else to say about that really? Walls are great for holding roofs up and putting doors and windows in, but on a more personal level, I like walls because they make great backdrops for portraits. Walls also prevent my subjects from running away in the opposite direction. Shake it like a Polaroid picture…

June 5, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

I sent a batch of films off to be developed in Germany about three weeks ago – they were supposed to be developed and scanned, the negatives hermetically stored and the high-resolution files emailed back to me, all within 10 working days. This has not been the case. This isn’t the kind of tardy, lacklustre performance I’d expect from our super-efficient Euro-neighbours, but then I realised that half the population of Germany are here on the Isle of Man, watching […]

‘horses for courses…

May 22, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

Both the images above of musician, Mae Challis, were made using a digital Canon EOS 5DmkIII and 50mm f1.0 lens – a lot of people think I’ve got this whole ‘anti-digital’ thing going-on – I haven’t, if I shot all my work, personal and commercial, on film I’d be bankrupt within about a week! I think people mistake digital and film photography as being the same medium, but it’s like saying pens and pencils are the same – they look […]

Mañana nunca muere …

February 14, 2015 by Phil Kneen Photography

“We are nonchalantly throwing all of our data into what could become an information black hole without realising it. We digitise things because we think we will preserve them, but what we don’t understand is that unless we take other steps, those digital versions may not be any better, and may even be worse, than the artefacts that we digitised…If there are photos you really care about, print them out.” – Vint Cerf, Google I’ve been saying the same thing to […]

This week…

October 8, 2014 by Phil Kneen Photography

I published the above image on my Facebook page a few weeks ago, I really love it, which is why I published it, but it received a few negative comments and was then removed for containing ‘sexually explicit content’, which I found a bit odd. Anyway, it put me off publishing the image again, but my good friend and PA, Ciara, has been nagging me to show it. So here it is, I still love it. This week I received […]
