VM
Images from a recent shoot for Veronika Mikan Nightwear. All the photographs were made using the same camera, lens and film combination with natural daylight – Pentax 67, 105mm and Fuji Pro 400H film. 400H is a very versatile emulsion and various looks can be achieved by deliberately over or underexposing it. I rate the film at 250 ISO and work around that. Overexposure gives a very ‘clean’ fresh look, whereas underexposing creates a distinct magenta cast in the shadows. […]

Skinheads
I shot these images for Charlie Dickinson, who is currently studying for a BA Hons in Fashion Design at Middlesex University, London. Charlie decided, despite being strongly discouraged, to base her ‘zine project around the skinhead subculture of the 80’s and 90’s Great Britain. I’m glad she decided not to listen. I shot the project using a Nikon F100 paired with 50mm and 28mm lenses. I loaded out of date Kodacolar to give a more authentic look. Fashion Styling & […]

Jessica
In the 15 years since Jessica was born, I must have taken thousands of photographs of her; she’s now at the point where, most of the time, she doesn’t know, or care, that I’m taking her picture. When my daughter is aware, I’m photographing her, such as here, she has the most amazing sultry, ‘resting bitch face’ look; she can even raise one eyebrow when provoked, just like her Mum. This shoot was actually ‘commissioned’ by Jessica herself. Makeup and […]

Fish & Chips
Photographer, musician, sculptor, writer, architect… if you create anything, you will have your champions and you will have your detractors – the people who applaud when you succeed, and the people who applaud when you fail. Whatever it is you conceive and produce, someone will always cast negativity all over it. I’m not talking about constructive criticism here, or even indifference – I’m referring to the people who, no matter how technically and aesthetically perfect you think your concept and […]

Instax Gratification
Although my adoration for instant film comes in waves, my love for it will never die. At the moment I’m surfing a tsunami of infatuation for Fuji Instax, the only truly instant film still available. Obviously, I’m aware of the existence of other ‘instant’ emulsions – but peel apart is hardly accessible to the masses, and the glacial rate at which Impossible Project’s Polaroid replacement develops can hardly place any of its films in the ‘instant’ category. I’ve been using […]
