Tokyo holiday snaps

DSCF0529I’ve been in Tokyo for the last two weeks, which is why my blog has been quiet. I shot a lot of film while I was there, mostly on my little Olympus MjuII compact – I did take my Nikon F100 and a couple of lenses, and a Fuji X100T digital compact, but after a couple of days hauling even a relatively small bag around I admitted defeat and left the hotel every morning with just the compact and my iPhone 6s. My first port of call on the day we arrived was Yodobashi Camera store in the Shinjuku district of the city – the area dedicated to all things celluloid is bigger than most camera shops in the UK, so I was in heaven.

All the images here were made using my iPhone 6s and VSCOcam. As soon as I get the films back I’ll post a series of ‘The things I saw’ articles… now I shall wash my clothes, pack my camper van and prepare for a 6000 mile road-trip on Monday.

  1. It seemed like months, and now you’re away for another 2 weeks? 😦

Looks like you had the most amazing time, Mr Adventure (and worlds best dad). X

  2. Calling these photographs “snaps” does not do you, or your images justice. They are well crafted and beautifully composed images that have your usual Phil Kneen knock me down, stand me up and knock me down again impact. You show how that little iPhone camera can be a powerful tool in the right hands.

  3. Fantastic. I can’t wait to see the film shots. I don’t know if in Tokyo I’d be in camera heaven or camera hell due to not being able to buy it all…..

  4. ‘Snaps’? I don’t know anyone who can produce holiday snaps like this?! I wish I could have been there with you… maybe next time? I can’t wait to see you! Xxx

  5. I’m totally in love with your photography, Phil. I get withdrawal pains when you don’t post anything for days! I’d like to, way day, sit and share a bottle of wine with you and you can tell me stories of your travels. You fascinate me!

  6. I think you do yourself a massive disservice describing these images as ‘snaps’ – you, Phil, could make art out of any photographic devise that was placed in your hands, it’s what you do.

  7. Great series. Love the plastic food window example, the vending machine, the Shinkansen and other train interiors. But hell, they fade into insignificance when there is a giant, erect, pink willie on display! What is the story behind it?

  8. Nice shots, Phil. I’m especially taken with the one of the woman looking at her tea mug and the one of the woman nodding off holding the rose.
