Publish and be damned…

May 15, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

***ALL COPIES OF THIS HAVE NOW BEEN PRE-ORDERED*** In the next few weeks I’m going to be qpublishing a selection of my Canada project photographs, mainly images shot in and around Yellowknife, but also some from much further south, in Hamilton. I’ll be presenting the images over 16 pages in a quality tabloid newspaper format (the photograph below is a sample from the printers, the shots aren’t mine). The print run will be strictly limited to 500 copies (numbered and […]

The Hamilton Diary #1

May 6, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

At the beginning of April, on my way up to Yellowknife, I stopped off in Ontario, Canada, to see Ned. Since my own brother caught the slightly earlier train two and a half years ago, Ned is the closest I have to a sibling. This was the first time I’d actually seen Ned, in the flesh, for five years, but I climbed into his van at Lester B Pearson airport and we picked-up like we’d seen each other a couple […]

Cars and Girls…

April 30, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

Sorry, there are no girls, just cars, I needed a catchy title and ‘cars and girls’ sounded good. You were tricked, I’m afraid…but hey, while you’re here, you may as well have a look at some cars. Canada, not just Yellowknife, turns me into some kind of abandoned car enthusiast, it’s bizarre. When I’m at home I never really feel the urge to document cars of any kind, let alone ones that have been left to rot in driveways, but […]

Road-trippin’ with Holga

April 28, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

My two favourite pastimes – photography and road-trips, they go hand in hand. Road tripping in the Northwest Territories of Canada is fairly simple, because there really aren’t that many roads, but they are VERY long roads. I didn’t actually drive that far, just Yellowknife to Rae/Edzo, I was in a truck that my most excellent friend, and fellow photographer, Pat Kane had lent me, so I didn’t want to take the piss. Had I have been in a hire […]

Characters and Cars

March 24, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

This time next week I’m heading back to the Northwest Territories of Canada to continue shooting a long-term project I’m working on in the area. I’ll be spending most of my time based in Yellowknife, but I’ll also be visiting Hay River, a 40 minute flight South from YK in a DC3 aeroplane that’s older than my dad. I’ll also be heading north, hopefully on a more modern plane, to the town of Inuvik, which is situated on the frozen […]

Against the Wall

January 8, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

I took a medium format film camera and flash to a New Years Eve party, probably not a great idea when you take into account my propensity to lose/break equipment while under the influence, but I’m glad I did. I shot all these images within about 2 hours, but decided to stop when I started loading film back to front… I photographed on a Mamiya 7II rangefinder camera and a Vivitar 285 flash. All the photographs were made in almost […]

compact and bijou

November 12, 2012 by Phil Kneen Photography

My entire website is actually an attempt to convert every photographer in the world into shooting film. My quest is to send-out subliminal messages every few days via the medium of WordPress…my plan is coming together nicely (rubs hands together, big booming Dr Evil laugh, etc, etc) The most common argument I hear for nor getting down with celluloid is that shooting film is too expensive. It’s not expensive – I shot all of these images using a second-hand Olympus […]

The Happy Accidents.

August 12, 2012 by Phil Kneen Photography

Serendipity, the pleasant surprises, happen a lot in film photography because there is so much that can go wrong – knocking a dial here, forgetting to change setting there. My favourite is forgetting to change the film speed, I regularly shoot film at the totally wrong ISO. Most film cameras have a little slot on the back where you can slide-in a piece of the film packaging to remind you what emulsion you’re shooting, but I usually forget to do […]

Six Quatre Cinq Road Trippin’

June 30, 2012 by Phil Kneen Photography

I took these shots in France a couple of weeks ago. My friend, Rich Plumley, and I flew down, I had some shots to get in Bergerac and had arranged a meeting with a photo agency in Paris, so we decided to drive the 1000 miles back to the Isle of Man, via the capital. Things didn’t go quite to plan… I’d organised to meet in a cafe near the Eiffel Tower at 5pm, by 4pm we were still 70 […]
