Publish and be damned…

May 15, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

***ALL COPIES OF THIS HAVE NOW BEEN PRE-ORDERED*** In the next few weeks I’m going to be qpublishing a selection of my Canada project photographs, mainly images shot in and around Yellowknife, but also some from much further south, in Hamilton. I’ll be presenting the images over 16 pages in a quality tabloid newspaper format (the photograph below is a sample from the printers, the shots aren’t mine). The print run will be strictly limited to 500 copies (numbered and […]

Tomahawk

May 11, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

Rob Smith, artist and sometime actor/model – I photographed Rob as part of my ‘Scar Tissue’ project, I won’t tell you where his scar is, but I’ll give you one clue as to how he got it – Tomahawk… This isn’t the first time I’ve photographed Rob, he sat in the big leather armchair a few months ago, another project that I’m part-way through. Rob’s a great model, he knows exactly what to do, or more importantly, what not to […]

Cars and Girls…

April 30, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

Sorry, there are no girls, just cars, I needed a catchy title and ‘cars and girls’ sounded good. You were tricked, I’m afraid…but hey, while you’re here, you may as well have a look at some cars. Canada, not just Yellowknife, turns me into some kind of abandoned car enthusiast, it’s bizarre. When I’m at home I never really feel the urge to document cars of any kind, let alone ones that have been left to rot in driveways, but […]

Characters and Cars

March 24, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

This time next week I’m heading back to the Northwest Territories of Canada to continue shooting a long-term project I’m working on in the area. I’ll be spending most of my time based in Yellowknife, but I’ll also be visiting Hay River, a 40 minute flight South from YK in a DC3 aeroplane that’s older than my dad. I’ll also be heading north, hopefully on a more modern plane, to the town of Inuvik, which is situated on the frozen […]

Music to my ears.

March 16, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

I’ve never been particularly musical, I wish I was, but I just don’t get it. Some people don’t understand apertures and ISO’s, I don’t understand cords and notes. Many people have tried to teach me, all have failed. I do like the music scene though, but how can you get involved if you’re tone-deaf? Take photos! I’ve been involved in music photography for a few years now, I’ve photographed the odd famous musician and a lot of not so famous […]

R.I.P, Miss Holga…

March 9, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

I smashed my Holga beyond repair today, even duct tape couldn’t save it. I went to kneel down to take a photograph, as I did I dropped the camera and kneeled on it, my full seventeen and a half stone concentrated on the Holga with the road beneath. It stood no chance whatsoever, the lens pushed into the body, smashing it in to about ten pieces. I’d claim on the insurance, but hey, I can get a new one for […]

Made in China

March 7, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

Whenever I’m getting a bit bored or disillusioned with photography, which I sometimes do, I just load-up a Holga and harmony is restored. THese £25 plastic Chinese cameras are as basic as photography gets these days, and I love them! There are 4 focus zones to choose – close, a bit further away, far away and REALLY far away. Exposure control is even more basic – Sunny and not sunny…and that’s it, load your film and off you go. You […]

1990 (Olympus OM1, 50mm, Ilford HP5 film)

The eye of the beholder.

February 24, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

I took the photograph above in 1990, in southwest France. I was about 20 years old and not particularly financially well-off, but that never seemed to matter, I made this on a beat-up Olympus OM1 and 50mm lens. I was rationing myself to 1 roll of film every 3 days, as it’s all I could afford, but again, that was never really a problem. When I got home I had the films developed, this one was one of my favourites. […]

Downtime.

February 20, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

I had so many plans for the last couple of weeks, I was going to work on ‘The Old Leather Chair’ project, get a load of shots done, but it was not to be. I’ve been struck down by some hideous virus which has rendered me completely immobile for the last two weeks, at least. I normally handle ‘downtime’ quite well, if it’s just a head cold I can still work and even when I slipped a disc in my […]

Less is more.

February 13, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

For the last couple of weeks I’ve been sorting-out what gear to take, or more accurately, what gear NOT to take to Canada in 6 weeks time. I took far too much gear last time, too many different formats and 4 different types of film. I was shooting on 6x7cm, 6×4.5cm, 35mm and Fuji Instax instant film, using colour and black and white with 3 different film speeds. In April I’m taking a Mamiya 7II, 80mm lens, a sekonic light […]
