Lenny’s Right Knee

May 15, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

This is the first in a series of articles that explores my fascination (some might say morbid fascination…) with scars. Most people have at least one. I have an eight inch long scar that runs down the left hand side on my belly which looks like a giant slug, a 30-year-old reminder not to dive into rivers without checking the depth. Some scars have an amusing story attached, mine does – as I dived into the river which hid the […]

Publish and be damned…

May 15, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

***ALL COPIES OF THIS HAVE NOW BEEN PRE-ORDERED*** In the next few weeks I’m going to be qpublishing a selection of my Canada project photographs, mainly images shot in and around Yellowknife, but also some from much further south, in Hamilton. I’ll be presenting the images over 16 pages in a quality tabloid newspaper format (the photograph below is a sample from the printers, the shots aren’t mine). The print run will be strictly limited to 500 copies (numbered and […]

Tomahawk

May 11, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

Rob Smith, artist and sometime actor/model – I photographed Rob as part of my ‘Scar Tissue’ project, I won’t tell you where his scar is, but I’ll give you one clue as to how he got it – Tomahawk… This isn’t the first time I’ve photographed Rob, he sat in the big leather armchair a few months ago, another project that I’m part-way through. Rob’s a great model, he knows exactly what to do, or more importantly, what not to […]

Shine a light.

May 5, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

I’m having a love/hate relationship with a Fuji X-Pro1 digital camera & 35mm 1.4 lens. Most of the hates are minor – the exposure compensation dial is very easy the knock out, but I solved that the way I do with a lot other other loose dials – gaffer tape. All the other hates are so minor I can’t even remember what they are…?…anyway, the BIG negative – the focusing. I did the 2.03 firmware update yesterday, the one that, […]

Canadorama

April 29, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

All Images made with a Holga 120 Pano 6x12cm camera and Fuji Acros 100 film in the Hamilton (Ontario) and Yellowknife (NWT) areas of Canada. I wasn’t going to take this camera with me, but I’m so glad I did now. The scenery, the weather, everything lent itself to grungy monochromatic images like these. It’s got me thinking about experimenting with a bit of pinhole photography… I’m starting the long process of scanning and cataloguing 70+ sheets of negatives from my […]

Canon G15 digital compact, edited in Adobe Lightroom 4

Who knew?

April 25, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

I recently read an article in The British Journal of Photography that Sebastião Salgado, arguably the worlds finest photojournalist, now shoots all of his work on digital, the article amazed me, not the fact that Seb has finally caught-up with technology, but his working process – he shoots his images on digital cameras, then edits the files using DxO film pack, a £75 software, to put a Kodak Tri-X black and white ‘look’ on the images. Most photographers would leave […]

Rush hour, up north...

Home again.

April 18, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

All the images here were shot on a Canon G15 digital compact camera (which I picked-up in Toronto for CAN$399. The cheapest UK price I can find is £429, so I’m thinking I got a bit of a bargain) I’m actually quite liking this little camera… So, that’s another shoot over. Two and a half weeks and 79 rolls of film later, I’m back home, the films have been sent off to be developed at Peak Imaging and I’m recovering […]

Hong Kong Delight

March 29, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

For the last couple of weeks I’ve been shooting with a Holga 120 PAN 6x12cm film camera. I like the 6×12 format, but can’t really justify the £4000 for a secondhand Linhoff version. This Chinese incarnation of the camera is all plastic, including the lens, and cost a mere £69. I’ve had varying degrees of success it – I can’t quite work-out what the closest focus distance actually is? In the instructions it says 1 metre on one page […]

Characters and Cars

March 24, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

This time next week I’m heading back to the Northwest Territories of Canada to continue shooting a long-term project I’m working on in the area. I’ll be spending most of my time based in Yellowknife, but I’ll also be visiting Hay River, a 40 minute flight South from YK in a DC3 aeroplane that’s older than my dad. I’ll also be heading north, hopefully on a more modern plane, to the town of Inuvik, which is situated on the frozen […]

R.I.P, Miss Holga…

March 9, 2013 by Phil Kneen Photography

I smashed my Holga beyond repair today, even duct tape couldn’t save it. I went to kneel down to take a photograph, as I did I dropped the camera and kneeled on it, my full seventeen and a half stone concentrated on the Holga with the road beneath. It stood no chance whatsoever, the lens pushed into the body, smashing it in to about ten pieces. I’d claim on the insurance, but hey, I can get a new one for […]
